Not Cool

I used to suck my thumb when I was little. In fact, I had this nasty habit all the way until Kindergarten when I just couldn't bear to do it in front of my friends at naptime. I remember sleeping with my thumb under my bottom at night just to break the habit. I always joke that I was never a smoker because I remembered how hard it was to break that habit and I didn't want to be in the same boat again! :)

So, I have been a big advocate of pacifiers with both of my girls. Besides, you can throw away a paci but you can't throw away a body part. Plus, I always heard that a thumb-sucker becomes/is a very insecure person and of course I don't want that for my girls! Oh, and then there's the whole orthodontic reason...

Well, 5 months in with Ella on the pacifier and she has decided that she really likes her thumb. Being the crazy mom that I am, I stick the paci in her mouth every chance I get in attempt to prevent her from resorting to her thumb. But I've been noticing that, in the middle of the night when her paci falls out, she'll sometimes put her thumb in her mouth to suck on in its absence. What can I do? I can't say that I am too surprised... she has been such an easy baby and I think she's just trying to make it even more easy by throwing a thumb in her mouth instead of crying for her paci. I can't complain there.

So, I will continue to give her the paci with hope that she will forget about that thumb. Or maybe I should put something really sour on her thumb or maybe I should make her wear gloves to bed or ......... or maybe I should just deal with the fact that she is just like her mommy! :)
